Claiming Back PPI

Consumers should complain first to the bank or loan provider from whom they bought the  PPI policy.

There are several complaint template letters available. If the bank or loan provider has not dealt with the complaint to the customer’s satisfaction within eight weeks, the customer has a right to take his or her case to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Consumer web sites such as the Consumer Action Group or Money Saving Expert are sites to meet a large number of people who have had to work through similar problems, and they gained huge expertise through their real-life experience.

Marc Gander says that a lot of thought is needed when making a claim, but for a payment of £10 you can make your bank disclose the data they hold on you. Send the bank a Data Protection Act demand letter for all data relating to your loan and the  PPI, which they hold on you in any form.

The consumer web sites will generally advise you how to word these demands and may even provide you with templates.

The banks are obliged to comply within 40 days for the £10 fee.

Once this data is collected the complaint letter can be sent.
