In the United Kingdom, Payment protection insurance (PPI) is a type of insurance that covers outstanding debts.

People make use of this insurance when they secure loans such as mortgages, credit cards, or car loans. Borrowers file a PPI claim when they can no longer pay the loan in the event of an accident, illness, job retrenchment, or death. Many are not aware that they can file for PPI refunds. Because of this oversight, they miss out on getting a refund worth thousands of pounds.

People can get a PPI from various sources. There are lending companies that offer the insurance along with the loan. For example, banks offer the borrower a PPI along with a home mortgage. They consider the PPI as an add-on product. Borrowers can choose to get the PPI from the insurance company itself. Mis sold PPI claims are the result of an agent’s persistence in its purchase even if it is not necessary.

Why should people make a claim for PPI refunds?

One of the many reasons people file a PPI is for financial protection. This type of insurance covers your expenses in case you no longer have the capacity to pay your debts. It provides you with enough money until you can financially recover or until you find yourself a new job.

How do I secure my PPI refunds?

You can start securing your PPI refund by writing a letter to your insurance company or bank. Start by stating why you think your insurance was mis-sold. Make sure you enumerate all valid claims to support your case. Include a clear breakdown of your computation and attach it in your letter.

Your lender might not grant your request on your first try. They usually do this to discourage you from taking any further action. The case might seem hopeless at first but if you are vigilant and persistent, you have a high chance of reclaiming your money back.

Make sure you give them an ultimatum. This is to inform them that you know what you are doing and are not afraid. Get the Financial Ombudsman Service involved if you receive no reply or another rejection. Let them know that you are ready to take the legal steps against them if necessary.

How can I get the PPI refunds?

Getting your PPI refund may take some time so you need to be a little patient. Know how to talk and deal with other people. Don’t be surprised when lenders become aggressive in answering back. The process could take one or two more years in most cases.

You can also choose to hire the services of a claims company to make things easier for you. You can look for a reliable claims company on the internet. Make sure you find a reputable company that can negotiate your claim. They should have experience in dealing with mis sold PPI claims and can provide you with client references to back it up.

You should also do your own research if you want to find the best financial consultant group. There are many cases involving PPI claims in England, so you can expect many companies offering you their expert services. Search the website of each company and check out their portfolio. You can get your PPI refunds easily if you know what steps to take. Choose a good claims company if you want to get back what truly belongs to you.

The mis-selling of payment protection insurance or PPI is the last thing you want to experience as a borrower.

Usually, insurance providers offering PPI policies assess their client’s circumstances to establish if the product is suitable for them. If your insurance provider did not, you may be a victim of mis-selling. If you’re unsure about the way that your policy was sold or have concerns over whether the insurance is right for you it may be high time to seek advice on how to claim your money back. After all, insurance plans are meant to offer you security and peace of mind not sabotages your finances.

Mis-selling of PPI policies has reached an alarming rate. In 2011, a number of banks announced that they had set aside billions of pounds as compensation for mis-sold PPI policies. Only recently senior executives have had to repay bonuses as a result of this scandal. This demonstrates that mis-selling was rife within some financial institutions. So how can you find out if you’re eligible to refund the PPI plan you have taken out?

In cases of mis-sold PPI policies it is commonly found that the terms and conditions of the policy were not discussed. Instead, the sales person may have made it look as though taking out a PPI policy was a prerequisite of a financial product. In essence making clients feel they had to take out a plan. In this regard it is helpful to establish the eligibility and suitability of an individual to have a PPI plan.

Those who are self-employed, unemployed, students and housewives/husbands are often not suitable for PPI policies. If you fall into any of these categories and you cannot recall whether you were asked if you wanted to take out a PPI policy you may be entitled to compensation.

Options for PPI Claims and their Process

If you find yourself in this situation, you have 2 options:

1. Write a letter to the bank stating your complaint and your belief that you were mis-sold a PPI policy when you applied for the mortgage, loan or other financial product. Or better yet,

2. Contact a claims management company that can help you go through the process. We PPI refund company that acts on a no win no fee basis and only takes a payment for their service once you have received you compensation. A regulated company will help make the process easier and take the worry and stress out of your hands. Always be sure to ask about the company’s fees and be aware of any hidden charges. A reputable PPI refund company will have no qualms about providing you with this information either over the phone or in writing. Some PPI Refund companies will provide their clients with a “personal” account manager that will act as your dedicated assistant in claiming your compensation. They will inform you of the progress and keep you updated as the claim progresses.

Making a PPI claim can be made easier by opting to use the services of a claims management company. They deal with hundreds of claims a week, are client centered and have systems that streamline the process to make claiming PPI compensation as stress free and as quick as possible.

PPI Refunds Explained

In the latter part of 2011, the government told the public that some of the largest financial institutions owed them money. If you or someone you know took out a loan, mortgage or credit card in the last ten years, then you just might have a right to make a Payment Protection Insurance, or PPI, refunds claim.

PPI was actually designed to help you, the borrower.

When you or someone else got a loan, mortgage or credit card around a decade ago, it came with an extra amount that you pay over the principal and interest you are repaying. PPI was meant to offer you protection in case you could not meet monthly repayments due to reasons like illness or redundancy.

The banks sold PPI under different names. Some of you probably saw something called the Mortgage Payment Protection Insurance (MPPI), or the Personal Loan Protection (PLP). Others called it Credit Card Repayment Protection (CCRP).

No matter what its name was, the PPI attached to your loan, mortgage or credit card happened without your knowledge. The first time you heard of it was probably after the news media broke the story of the Financial Services Authority (FSA) fining several large banks and other financial institutions for PPI. All this time, you might have been overpaying your premiums as high as thousands of Pounds.

Due to the FSA action, thousands of individuals have been able to get PPI refunds. You are able to make this PPI reclaim action because of the FSA ruling that the banks mis-sold many of these policies to costumers. Examples of the practice include telling a customer it was not optional or that the PPI would increase your chances of getting the loan or mortgage approved.

Another reason you can take this PPI reclaim action is that it was included in your loan, mortgage or credit card without an assessment of your financial capacity. Even people who could easily keep up with their payments every month got a PPI tacked onto their policies. In cases like this, the FSA deemed it was an unnecessary or even unsuitable practice, allowing people in such a situation to ask for PPI refunds.

In most cases, a PPI reclaim action can get you back 100% of your premium. The only exception to this so far is if a loan account is in arrears. If that is the case, the lender can take out the cost of the arrears before giving you your PPI refunds.

Customers are not limited to a single PPI reclaim action. If you took out loans, mortgages and credit cards with PPIs tacked to them, you can claim PPI refunds from all of them since you were paying the supposed protection policy for each one.

The FSA is currently the lead government agency that handles PPI refunds but the increase in claims has swamped the agency. They normally take two weeks to process claims but even with increasing their staff, their backlog could go up. If you cannot wait and want your PPI refunds now, several organizations can help you make your claims.

PPI refunds became a source of controversy when many policyholders found themselves paying for this insurance without their consent.

If you feel you might also be part of this group, it’s time to know what you’re facing.

All about PPI Refunds

Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) is an insurance product enabling consumers to guarantee payments for debts or loans. Various insurance firms offer this to clients to create some sort of safety net for future debts or loan payments. The primary idea behind this is making sure people have enough money to cover loan payments in case they become sick, lose jobs, or get into a fatal accident.

The good part in PPI is it offers financial protection.

Think of it as something similar to getting insurance for a vehicle, health or home, and you’ll understand why. With PPI, you have insurance on future debt payments.

This is a great idea because it avoids situations where you have to borrow money just to pay for loans. It also means avoiding applying for high interest loan remodification from unscrupulous lending firms. PPI helps you keep financial independence even when in dire situations.

Insurance companies are the primary sources of PPI policies. This means a potential buyer has the option which insurance firm to choose for this plan. This also implies that loan applicants may inspect offers up close before signing up for premiums. Paying for PPI becomes unscrupulous when an insurance company charges PPI within your policy without your knowledge. This can happen in various ways. A few dishonest insurance brokers might include PPI in your policy contract by hiding this within the agreement. An applicant who does not read the contract thoroughly often becomes a victim of such circumstance. Another tactic is to misstate its significance. Some brokers might exaggerate its actual importance by telling clients their future loan applications may not get approval without PPI insurance.

Some firms may also not inform consumers outright about getting the PPI policy elsewhere, from other companies offering them at a lower premium. Worse, some might even claim clients simply can’t buy PPI as a standalone insurance product. Clients charged for PPI payments under their existing policy may file for PPI refunds or PPI claims.

PPI refund eligibility

The only way to see if you have been unknowingly paying for PPI is to check your current insurance policy. Go over the document thoroughly and see if there are charges that stick out. If you see any policy that implies you are paying it to ensure repayment for loans, it means you have a shot for PPI claims.

Processing PPI claims can be easier if you get the proper assistance. This said, consider companies processing refunds for faster results. Look for these firms on the Web and study what they offer before choosing one. Read contracts carefully so you know what to expect from your provider.

5 Steps to Getting a PPI Refund

By Vincent Rogers

The basic steps to getting PPI refunds are going over the details of your loan or loans yourself, contacting the lender about your loan and looking at your credit report, talking to your lender about a PPI refund, talking to an ombudsman about a PPI refund and waiting to hear back from the ombudsman. You can call an ombudsman about what to do. Generally what you would do is contact the bank first and the financial ombudsman after. Contact the specific branch relevant to your policy of the bank in question. Going after a PPI refund is often worth a shot even if the loan was only a verbal agreement, not a written one, though the process tends to be easier with written agreements.

Try an Ombudsman

You can try reclaiming your PPI even if you are not sure whether you were sold one or not.

A claim can also be made if your debt has been passed to a collection agency. Reclaiming PPI on an old account is possible, though it is easiest if it was active in the past 6 years. PPI refunds regarding loans older than this can still happen. Reclaiming PPI also will not affect your credit rating, by the way, and you can make claims concerning multiple PPI policies for different loans at the same time, whether these loans were at the same bank or not. Each claim does require separate paperwork, however.

PPI Details

You can also reclaim PPI after you have reclaimed bank charges. Reclaiming can still happen on a loan that you have paid off, and it can also still happen if you are no longer a customer of the bank in question. A debt management plan or even a bankruptcy are not relevant to your ability to make a PPI claim. A bank will often automatically use reclaimed PPI money towards paying off your outstanding debt with that institution if you have any, but you may be able to reverse this if you are in a position of financial hardship and need the money for something else. However, concerning bankruptcy, your official receiver will most likely get your PPI refund.

More on PPI Matters

PPI refunds can still occur if your old lender has been taken over in the meantime by another institution, and you may also be able to do so if your old lender no longer exists. PPI monies that are now part of an estate can often also be reclaimed. PPI matters can be a grey area when it comes to divorces, however, though it is still probably worth looking into. You can also reclaim if you now live abroad. Reclaimed PPI monies can number in the thousands of pounds. PPI claims are most often related to bank policies, but there are also catalogue, car loan, credit card and store card policies, but not often mortgage policies. Many different financial products can be associated with PPI policies.

This industrial mis-selling which took place was not going unnoticed in the insurance sector, yet nothing was being done, and consumers were paying the price; at least from Financial Ombudsman Service’s perspective (FOS). An FOS spokesperson claimed that the insurance industry is in part responsible for these mis-sellings, since they did not take a proactive role and stop them from continuing.

The insurance industry has been seen as less culpable in the eyes of most people, even though they had knowledge in the mis-selling which was occurring, and they should also be held accountable for their errors and not steppingng in sooner.

The insurers had a responsibility as part of the product delivery to ensure their policies are sold in accordance with regulations and FSA/FCA compliance requirements.

Although most of the blame has been put on banks, for charging consumers with these huge PPI insurance premiums, and not letting them know they were being charged, or not informing consumers they had the option to stop paying for the coverage, the insurance sector had a duty to step in, and failed the consumers in their duty to provide these policies in a fair manner.

In a recent judicial review, brought by BBA (principally), against the updates of the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and Financial Ombudsman Services (FOS), and the judges rejected BBA’s arguments claiming the rules were unfair because they were retrospective.

The BBA isn’t going to ask for an appeal; therefore, all the claims which were put on hold during the case are being processed. Although it might take some time, these claims will be paid out.

So, how much compensation can claimants expect to receive after this judicial holding?

The amount will depend on how many individuals come forward with valid complaints, and how many cases turn up as a result of the bank reviewing past PPI sales (even in cases the customer has not complained). The FSA estimated in 2010 that the rules increase the number of complaints to 550,000 a year, for the next five years.

Although it isn’t certain, the FSA has estimated that an individual who had been mis-sold by a lender (single-premium policy), where all costs were paid upfront, can expect 1,800 pounds. An individual who bought a policy requiring regular premiums can expect to receive about 900 pounds. If you have not filed a complaint, and feel you have been mis-sold, you can begin the claims process now.

HSBC has been allotted extra time by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) to deal with the claims and complaints which they cannot keep up with, due to the millions of filings by consumers in regards to PPI insurance claims.

Mid June, 2011, the FSA allotted certain banks extra time to pay out on these claims, which are coming in by the thousands per week. Normally banks have 8 weeks to pay out, or at least reply to a claim, however, tens of thousands of claims have been put on hold (due to the court proceedings), therefore these banks have been given extra time to deal with claims which were on hold, and the claims which are currently still coming in. The new complaints which are coming in (after the judicial review hearing in April), but which are received before August 31 of 2011, must be handled by the banks within a period of 16 weeks.

Those received after (at the end of August), must be dealt within a 12 week period; and, anything after this time period banks have the normal 8 weeks to handle.

Although you can obtain PPI coverage from your lender, it is not always needed.

Make sure you need the coverage before purchasing it, because it can get very expensive to obtain. However, if you do decide to purchase PPI insurance, decide on the right coverage for your needs, in order to save the most money. Many companies today are offering standalone PPI, which can protect any loans you have taken more cheaply than using your lenders’ own insurance.

There are a couple different kinds of ways PPI providers vary coverage, but there are two basic choices which the consumer must make.

First, decide on the coverage you need. From accident/sickness, to unemployment coverage, to illness/death coverage, the more coverage purchased, the more expensive it will be. Second, you must backdate the benefits of your coverage so that you are paid for the periods prior to the normal 30 to 60 days period.

Make sure the coverage you are purchasing is necessary, and that you are not paying for double coverage. Redundancy is a theme among many individuals who purchase PPI coverage; therefore don’t fall into the trap from insurers to pay for something which you are already covered by with another policy.

British banks can no longer maintain their position that they can withhold PPI Claims.

They have decided not to contact people on their own however. If you have a loan, you may want to go check the documents covering the loan to see if you were sold payment protection insurance. Millions of people in the United Kingdom were sold Payment Protection Insurance policies that they did not want or need. The FSA has won a series of legal cases against representatives of the British Banking Industry. The court cases have forced the banks to contact their customers if they have similar claims, but a consumer should not count on this happening.

The banks are waiting for a final ruling

If a consumer suspects that he has falling victim to the predatory practices of banks selling PPI Claims, he needs to file a complaint against the issuing bank. The complaint forms are made available for free by a number of consumer watchdog groups who are concerned about the ethics the banks did not follow. Britain’s High Street banks have already started acting on the ruling. Those who filed a complaint previously did not do so again. If a person has a PPI policy and did not file a complaint, he needs to take action now.
